How to Make an AI Dance Video From a Photo
Choose a photo, a prompt or your own motion reference. Follow two Cicadas dance workflows, inspect the result and fix common mistakes.
Video examples here were generated on Cicadas and keep their model, settings and date. Cicadas earns money when you generate with these models. How we test
- Test window:
- 2026-09-27 – 2026-10-25
- Clips recorded with these models:
- 138
- Models:
- MiniMax H3 Max
- Their provider cost:

- Selection:
- every clip we keep is listed with its settings, cost and request ID; failed or discarded runs are listed in the test record.

To make an AI dance video, first decide whether you want an original dance from a photo or specific movement from a reference video. These need different inputs. Cicadas has an AI dance video generator for the first job and Motion Control AI for the second. This guide walks through both, including what to check before you share the MP4.
Choose the result before choosing a model
Use the photo-and-prompt path when a simple sway, side step or playful pet movement is enough. You supply one or two photos and describe a new scene. The dance page uses MiniMax H3 Max reference-image generation; a photo identifies who appears, rather than supplying a dance to copy.
Use motion control when timing and body movement matter. It needs a character image and a continuous action video you have permission to use. A model name or a song title cannot replace that reference. A fixed TikTok template also includes framing, editing and often licensed music; neither path automatically supplies that complete package.
Path 1: give your own photo a simple dance
- Open the dance generator. Choose a clear photo of a consenting adult or a pet. For a human dance, keep the head, hands and feet visible; avoid a crowded background and cropped joints. Use the reference slots shown on the page.
- Describe one repeated movement, the framing and the space around the subject. Start with a short duration and read the current credit quote before submitting. The page may open with a longer default; adjust it to your intended test.
- Generate, then watch the whole result before downloading. Check the face, hands, feet, floor contact and whether the camera hides the action. Save the accepted prompt and settings for the next version.
Here is an untested prompt draft, not a recorded result or a preset for a named song:
The consenting adult from Image 1 makes two small side steps to the left and two to the right, with a relaxed shoulder sway. Keep the face and plain clothing consistent. Full body visible throughout, feet on the floor, fixed vertical camera, uncluttered living room, one continuous shot. No extra people, no cuts, no text or logos.
Do not ask for a spin, jump, outfit change and moving camera in the same first test. If a foot slides, reduce the step length before increasing complexity. If the person changes appearance, improve the reference rather than adding more unrelated prompt details.
A recorded example, with its limitation
This existing Cicadas example was generated on October 16, 2026: MiniMax H3 Max, two reference photos, 5 seconds, vertical, with sound. The two adults hold each other and sway under fairy lights. The request also asked for one head to rest on the other's shoulder, which the clip did not deliver. It illustrates a simple movement and an observable miss; it does not validate complex choreography or the draft prompt above. See the couple video workflow for that input type.
Path 2: use a reference for particular moves
Open Motion Control AI, upload the character image and your permitted action video, and follow the page's input checks. Choose footage with one clearly visible moving subject, consistent framing and no montage cuts. Match the character image's body framing to the movement you want to preserve. Read the measured duration and quote before submitting.
After generation, compare the reference and output at the beginning, middle and end. Check whether gestures, direction and contact with the ground remain readable. A cropped reference cannot supply unseen feet, and a shot cut can make the intended movement ambiguous. If the result fails, simplify the reference or use a shorter continuous segment; do not keep changing the image, prompt and action clip together.
Motion control is a separate workflow from H3 Max reference images. It does not turn the dance page's photo uploader into a video-input field, and movement transfer is not a guarantee of an exact reenactment.
Finish a shareable clip
Download an accepted take and watch the downloaded file as well as the preview. Check the full frame for an extra limb, changing face, unexpected person or abrupt ending. The frame extractor can help inspect individual moments. Keep dialogue and music you have rights to use; generated audio is not a promise of a named song or beat-accurate choreography. If you add your own track in an editor, check the final export's timing and volume again.
Use the prompt guide when you need to narrow an action. Use MiniMax H3 Max settings when you need to understand the photo path's model. The useful result is a clip whose movement you can inspect and reuse, not merely a request that reached “completed.”
Questions before you generate
Can I make a dance video from one photo?
Yes, the dance page accepts a reference photo for an original prompt-driven scene. Use a clear consenting adult or pet image; it does not guarantee a particular choreography.
How do I copy a specific dance movement?
Use the separate Motion Control AI workflow with a character image and an action video you have permission to use. A text description alone does not supply exact timing.
Does Cicadas include Say It Right or BBY WOW templates?
This workflow does not supply those fixed templates or their songs. An original dance prompt should not be treated as a one-click copy of a viral clip.
Why do hands or feet look wrong?
Check that they are visible in the source, reduce motion and keep the camera steady. Review the full clip before spending on a longer take.
Is this a free workflow?
Read the current quote and any eligibility message on the chosen tool before submitting. This tutorial does not promise free generations or a particular trial allowance.
